Crystal Palace 1-1 Chelsea, Premier League: Post-match reaction; assessments

Selhurst Park can be a very intimidating place to play away games, with a roaring crowd roaring across the stands to push Crystal Palace on. That is not the case for Chelsea, who have won nine out of eleven games at the stadium since the Eagles were last promoted back to the Premier League.

Today in the early minutes of the first half it looked like we would keep the record up. Not even 15 minutes into the game, Cole Palmer opened the scoring after a sublime Jadon Sancho flick left several Palace defenders in the dust.

Apart from a few instances where Palace were able to find space and time in our box to shoot at the Robert Sánchez goal, the Blues largely dominated the game. Better luck and quality finishing up front could have seen us go to the tunnels with two or three goals in hand.

The second half saw the hosts balance things out a bit, with Eberechi Eze and Daniel Muñoz sharing the burden of creating and finishing off chances for Palace. It looked like their efforts would not be enough until Jean-Philippe Mateta scored on a play started by Muñoz and assisted by Eze.

  • Josh Acheampong gets a start at centre-back alongside Levi Colwill.
  • Jadon Sancho and Cole Palmer can really form a nice partnership between the two, both at club and international level.
  • No striker will ever score a goal from every chance they get in front of goal. But Jackson’s misses really hurt sometimes, and today was a day full of them.
  • First substitution takes place in the 81st minute, with Marc Guiu replacing Jackson.
  • Next: Morecambe at home in the FA Cup.
