Elon Musk’s financial reveal is not published

Elon Musk plans to submit a financial information report to the White House, but it will remain confidential, an official of the White House said Tuesday.

There has never been an employee of the White House with the great potential for conflicts such as Mr. Musk, the world’s richest person and the manager of leading companies in electric vehicles, space research and artificial intelligence.

But Mr. Musk serves President Trump as an unpaid “specialist”, which means his financial disclosure is not required public.

Mr. Musk received an ethical training this week, the official said, and Mr. Musk’s staff as part of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency is in the process of receiving their own education, said the White House Officer, who was talking about the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak in the post.

Special government employees, such as all federal employees except President and Vice President, are banned from federal criminal justice to take actions that directly come themselves or their families unless they have an ethical exception.

Mr. Musk’s companies have billions of dollars in federal contracts and are the subject of more than a dozen pending federal regulatory investigations or litigation, so he almost certainly needs an ethical exception, several former White House lawyers said.

The White House has not answered a request from The New York Times about a copy of the exception, a document required by federal law must be released. Ethical exceptions have typically been prepared on the basis of conflicts identified through an archiving of financial information, so that it is possible that no exception has been prepared yet.
