Malone has been known to deliver impressive covers of Nirvana songs, and he certainly did not disappoint at the SNL50 concert and offers an exciting version of the game that changed “smells like teen spirit” and collected a big hug from Grohl at the end of the performance.

The SNL performance marked the second surprise Nirvana genus within a few weeks, and Grohl, Novoselic and Smear, together with Joan Jett, St, Vincent, Kim Gordon and Violet Grohl at the recent FireAid distribution concert in Los Angeles.

Before it reunited the band at Cal Jam Fest in 2018 and in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in April 2014 as well as a secret after-party at the small St. Vitus Bar in Brooklyn that night.

Friday night Snl Gig marked Nirvana’s first big TV or streaming performance with a male singer since Kurt Cobain. The band played with Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis and Deer Tick’s John J. McCauley in the aforementioned Rock Hall after-party and with McCauley again at Cal Jam Fest.

Malone gained widespread recognition for a Nirvana tribute set, which he performed at the beginning of the pandemic back in April 2020. He recently announced he would release the 14-song set on vinyl for record store day on April 12.
