First Alarm Weather: Yellow Alarm of the Weekend for Snow and an icy mixture

Rochester, new – Our weather starts quietly this weekend with dry weather early on Saturday, but that will change quickly. Snow develops in the morning and continues and on to the afternoon and evening. The snow will generally be light to moderate with a 2-4 ″ accumulation for most areas. Our yellow alarm comes into force on Saturday night as the road conditions begin to deteriorate and we begin to see a transition to some gossip and freezing rain. This will put a break on any additional snowfall accumulation during Saturday night – Sunday morning, but roads will remain slurry and smooth. Then we see a transition back to Snow and then Lake Effect Snow on Sunday afternoon and evening with additional accumulations probably.

Total accumulations of the snowfall range from 7-10 ″ near Lake Ontario to as little as 2-4 ″ in the southern finger islands. This is due to the winter mix at times that cut down on the snowfall amount. That said, the exact track will make a huge difference in who sees what and how much. A light shift north in the trail of the storm will mean more ice and less snow, while a shift south would mean more snow and higher accumulation. Hold on to the first alarm weather team for the very best updates as new data continues to enter and the storm is evolving.

As the main storm moves away, it becomes windy and colder, with the lake effect that fetches. This is likely to add some additional snowfall accumulation to Monday, and wind coolers fall into the individual digits and below zero before Monday night.

The bitter air and less lake effect snow will continue through the middle of the week before another system that passes to our south could bring another round with the area’s scattered snow showers.
