Elsewhere, last year’s record-breaking Brits winner Raye took home the best rnb act price and there were also prices for Sam FenderFontaine’s DC and former Little Mix star Jade, who released a cry for his bandmates in his acceptance speech.

As usual, there were several memorable moments throughout the ceremony. Start with the opener …

Espresso/ Rule Britannia

Sabrina Carpenter understood the award. Think of Geri Halliwell’s Union Jack Tea Howl dress in 1996, Dua Lipa’s Pipe Arrival in 2021. The British stars know that we love to see the United Kingdom celebrated, but American star Sabrina Carpenter could have been forgiven to go without pomp and ceremony.

But no. She really did her homework.

Wearing a red sparkling military-style blazer dress and going down once that was lit with Union Flag, the star was followed by dancing beefeaters as she launched in espresso. A mash-up into Rule Britannia followed before moving on to perform a naughty reproduction of bed Chem.

We can only applaud.

The star later continued to collect the Global Success Award – advertised by none other than the music icon Diana Ross, who livestreamed into the ceremony from a show in New York.

Collection of the award on stage remembered Carpenter that he came to Britain for the first time 10 years ago when she said only that only 10 people knew who she was. Next week, she’s back on the O2 arena to the headline.

The espresso singer added: “The British have given me this award, and this feels like such a crazy honor in a very primary tea-drinking country … You really understood my dry sense of humor because your sense of humor is so, so dare. So I love you more than you even understand.”

Calls to save the grass roots

The rising star winner Myles Smith may be a newcomer to the Brit Awards, but he was not afraid to use the stage to leave his thoughts on the music industry.

The 26-year-old, who performed his songs, who were lovely to meet you and Stargazing, told the audience that while he had “the attention of the nation”, he would ask three questions, with his first to the government.

“If British music is one of the most powerful cultural exports we have, why have you treated it as a reflection for so many years?” he said. “How many more venues do need to close? How many more music programs need to be cut before we realize we can’t just celebrate success, do you have to protect the basis that does it?”

Smith continued to question big venues: “If artists who sell your arenas and your stadiums started in grassroots places, what do you do to keep them alive?”

Finally, “to the executives in the room and to the people behind the scenes” he asked, “Do we build careers, or are we just hunting moments?”

Last November last year plans were announced for one Volunteer tax on tickets for concerts at stadiums and arenas To help fund grassroots after the closures of high numbers in recent years.

Femi Koleoso from Ezra Collective also talked about the importance of nurturing young artists as the jazz group collected the Group of the Year award and said they are where they are now “because of the big youth clubs, and the great teachers and the great schools that support young people playing music”.

Bass player Georgia Davies from Indie Group The Last Dinner Party also talked about the importance of saving independent music places.

“We didn’t want to be a band, and a lot of the artists here wouldn’t be bands without Britain’s incredibly independent venues, and they are the lifeblood of the music industry and they are dying,” she said as the band collected the best new artist award.

Jack Whitehall’s return

It’s been four years since comedian Jack Whitehall was last at the helm of the British.

He made his comeback with gags about Stormzy – “The Grime Scene Ronald McDonald”, in the light of his Controversial cooperation with the fast food chain – and dynamic pricing after Ticket sales to Oasis -Genforening Services advertised last year.

Whitehall’s jokes also included a skit that sent Kanye West and Bianca Censoris notorious Grammy Red Carpet performance last month when CenSeri fell its coat to show an incredibly revealing dress and no underwear.

This time it was Whitehall’s parents, Michael and Hilary, and prepared to shock cardboard.

“It’s nothing you haven’t seen before, Jack,” his mother cried.

Stormzy does not agree with fan voting

The rapper was named best hip-hop/ grime act, one of the genres voted for by the public.

Wearing sunglasses on stage, he told the audience he had hurt his eye of playing paddle.

The 31-year-old said that although he was grateful to the British and those who had voted, “he did not” fully agree with the way the genre is chosen.

“I don’t quite think this award should be a fan-tuned,” Stormzy said. “I don’t think any of the prices should be fan-tuned, not on a controversial. I don’t know, sometimes I think it doesn’t let people get their moments.

“I think CENK (Central CEE) was the rap artist of the year, but these things don’t define us as much as they are amazing and we love them. I am very grateful to the British and I am grateful to the public.”

In addition to Charli XCX and Carpenter, it was a big evening for the American star Chappell Roan, who won the awards for best international artist and best international song, for good luck, honey!

The singer could not attend the ceremony, but recorded acceptance and dedicated his artist award to transartists, drag queens, fashion students, sex workers and the deceased Sinead O’Connor.

“Thanks to my team and my fans all over the world, but especially to my British girls, you’ve been there since the first day, and Chappell Roan was born through the experience of queer joy,” she said.

“It’s so special I had to write a whole album about it. I dedicate this to transartists, to pull queens, fashion students, sex workers and Sinead O’Connor. Because of all these people, they have laid the basis for me to be here today.”

He hailed that Whitehall said Payne had “achieved so much in the short time that he was on this earth, and was not only an extremely gifted musician, but an incredibly friendly soul who touched the life of everyone he came into contact with”.

He continued, “We have so many amazing memories of Liam here in the British, so tonight we celebrate his legacy.”

A video was then the game showing clips by the singer with his family, as well as footage from his time as a participant at X Factor and with One Direction.

Payne won seven awards with One Direction in the band’s time together and also performed at the event as he launched his solo career.
