Spring is almost here: what to know about Equinox and when it’s

Spring is so close I can feel it. Here in New Mexico Froliks Roadrunners, trees sprout, and I sow salad seeds in my swollen beds. Mark your calendars: The Vernal Equinox happens on March 20, signaling the astronomical start of spring in the northern hemisphere.

Equinoxes may not get the same attention as sunbathing, but they are a great way to observe the seasons. Let’s get to know Vernal Equinox and why it happens.

What is vernal spring equinox?

You have undoubtedly already noticed the extension of daylight when the winter runs. Vernal Equinox marks the tilt point for longer days.

The word “Equinox” comes from the Latin words for equal and night. Daylight and night are about just below Equinox. We experience two every year – the Vernal Equinox in the spring and the harvesting Equinox in the fall. The word “vernal” spores for Latin and references spring.

The earth spins on an axis (think of it as a line that runs from rod to rod) with a 23.5-degree slope. Some parts of the planet get more direct sun than others. This is how we get our seasons and how it can be summer in the northern hemisphere while it is winter in the southern hemisphere.

“Spring Equinox is when the Northern Hemisphere transfers from being clutched away from the sun (in winter) to being pointed to the sun (in summer),” says Emily Rice, Associate Professor of Astrophysics at Macaulay Honors College at City University of New York. “Tilt has been set up with the Earth’s orbit for just a moment.” That’s when we get almost equal amounts of daylight and night.

When does Spring Equinox happen?

Spring Equinox has a specific time, at. 02.01 PT on March 20th. No need to set an alarm. You can celebrate Equinox all day on March 20th.

How does Equinox differ from Solstice?

Solstices are extreme for days and nights. Summer solar is the longest day, while winter solar is the shortest. Summer solver for the northern hemisphere hits on June 20, while winter solar will occur on December 21 this year.

Solstices get more love than Equinoxes.

“The extremities are easier to mark and visualize than the bending points, which are more subtle changes, so that the solar stices get all the attention,” says Rice. All of them are related to the sun and the slope of the earth, so think of solar stices and equinoxes as siblings, each with their own seasonal connection.

You can see equinoxes from the room

It can be challenging to visualize the slope of the soil and what happens under Equinox down on the ground, so that NASA puts together a video showing the soil as seen by a satellite.

It tracks our planet through its seasons. See how night and daylight change over time.

Celebrates Spring Equinox

Maybe you’ve heard that the only day you can balance a raw egg on its end is on Equinox. This legend may be accompanied by some vague discussion points about the Earth’s gravity and adjustment and the sun.

I balanced this egg on its end in a day that was not equinox.

Amanda Kooser/Cnet

One of Rice’s annual Equinox tasks is to interrupt the egg balancing myth.

“Astronomers are usually on the Internet and tell people that no, they can’t actually balance an egg on its end on an equinox,” she says. You can go ahead and try it, but be sure to test it out in a day that is not equinox. I pulled it off on February 27, in case you wonder.

Equinox is a subtle phenomenon. There are no flashy sky events to mark the day. Don’t let that deter you. Vernal Equinox is what you make of it.

“Given that the Earth’s orbit does not have a beginning or an end, a year could really be started at any time, and Equinox is more astronomically meaningful than January 1,” says Rice.

You can come up with your own way of celebrating the apartment. Tell your friends and employees that this is the start of astronomical spring. Plant some seeds. Clean your house. Spend time outside. Make Spring Break plans. And take a moment to toast the sun, the slope of the earth and our place in the room that brings us the Vernal Equinox.
