Champions Trophy Final: India survives scare to beat New Zealand and win title

As has been the case in Dubai, spin was far more difficult to meet than tempo.

When he chased a score under-couple, Rohit pulled the second ball in the laps in six and dominated a position of 105 with colleague opener Shubman Gill.

New Zealand’s fightback was elicited by a fantastic one -handed catch of Glenn Phillips – his third such grip of the tournament – on Extra Cover to reject Gill in 31.

Kohli, usually the master of these hunts, went LBW to off-spinner Michael Bracewell, and Rohit was blunt as he went on to the left arm spinner Rachin Ravindra.

The partnership between 61 between Axar and Iyer was important in stable India, though both fell trying to accelerate. Iyer, who has already been dropped, flipped to short fine legs and Axar, tamed, turned into prolonged to give Santner and Bracewell a further wicket each.

However, the required driving speed was always under control. It pushed just a little over one race per day. Ball when Rahul remained calm, before Hardik pumped a rough just six with the winning line in sight.

It was appropriate that it was Jadeja, another veteran of this era with Indian White Ball cricket that flipped the winning runs from his hip. New Zealand fought admirably, but this is their fourth defeat in the final of a whiteball event since 2015.
