Detroit Lions release Veteran Edge Rusher Za’darius Smith: Report

Za’darius Smith’s time as Detroit Lion is reportedly over.

Espn and NFL network reported on Sunday Lions Release the veteran -defensive end one day before the NFL’s legal manipulation period for free agency begins. Smith joined the Lions as a mid -season deal in an attempt to increase Detroit’s Pasrush after losing Aidan Hutchinson for a season ending injury in October.

The lions sent Cleveland Browns A 2025 pick from the fifth round and a 2026 sixth round elections in return for Smith and 2026 seventh round elections. Smith, 32, had four sacks and three tackles for losses in eight matches for the lions and did not register a state outside a passport deflection in Detroit’s divisional draft loss to Washington commanders to end their season.

Smith had one year back on a two-year contract of $ 23 million, which he signed with Browns. According to Spotrac, Lions saved $ 5.75 million in Cap space by releasing Smith.
