Lack of winter rainfall puts Florida in an unsafe fire situation

Miami – Firefighters across Florida monitor dozens of fires as the state claims with worsening drought conditions under what is considered the state’s fire season.

On Thursday, some of the larger fires were reported north of Miami, west of Gainesville and near St. Augustine, which affected the air quality for local residents.

While none of the fires immediately threatened home, they ignited in counties that already experienced drought conditions ranging from abnormally dry to severe.

The forecasts warn that conditions are likely to continue to deteriorate through the spring as the dry brush back from winter and previous hurricanes acts as fuel for fires to burn.

“The combination of drought, beetle and hurricane-impacted fuels will continue to be worries from parts of the lower Mississippi valley through the southeast. Earlier in January, parts of southeastern Georgia already increased fires associated with Helene’s influences, and this is likely to carry through the spring from Florida Big Bend to the southern appalachers,” the national interagency center in a view of a view in a view of a view in a view in a view in a view in a view in a view in a view in a view in a view of a national appalachers, “the national out in recently.

Orlando is facing a precipitation deficit of more than two centimeters since the beginning of the year, while Miami is almost three inches below normal.

The period from the late winter to spring is typically Florida’s dry season and coincides with increased fire activity.

Conditions this year appear to have worsened by a La Niña pattern that limits moisture collection during the winter months.

The incidence of frontal limits with limited moisture improves further fire weather the risk of lowering the relative humidity and increasing the wind speeds.

The Said Florida Forest Service It tracks at least 40 active fires across the country, including the largest in Gilchrist County, west of Gainesville, which had burned almost 400 hectares.

No home has been lost to the flames, but officials warned that several weeks of active fire conditions were likely to be until significant rainfall returns – a pattern that is not expected to change before the annual thunderstorm season returns around the early summer.

During the La Niña cycles, Florida’s summer storm season typically begins in May for South Florida, with North and Central Florida after a week or two later. But with El Niño – Southern Oscillation pattern that switches to a neutral phase, the forecasts warn that the arrival of the rainy season could be delayed.

Florida’s thunderstorm season usually lasts through mid -September, giving much needed relief from the conditions of the fireplace and delivers most of the rainfall of the year.
