A race of 19-8 puts the USC ahead after a quarter

USC waves into the early lead behind (who else?) Juju Watkins

Then Juju Watkins entered the chat.

The teams squared on March 1 at Pauley Pavilion, with the Trojans (28-2), which secured a dominant 80-67 victory to demand the conference’s regular seasonal title.

Roar rained down from every corner of Pauley Pavilion, every soul of the Holy Hoops Arena by knowing the outcome of the Crosstown Showdown and the conference title that came with it, rested completely on her shoulders. Some in cardinal and gold were waiting for liberation, as if it were secured for the USC. Others in light blue asked for divine intervention that little else could save UCLA.

The feeling – of a whole arena hanging on her every single movement – is so well known to Juju Watkins. As she airballed a jumper in the third quarter, Superstar Sophomore could only smile as the crowd let her hear it, which reminded her every time she touched the ball.

In Hollywood, Blockbuster always hits a successor – even in Women’s College Basketball. UCLA Versus USC I was an instant classic suitable for the silver screen, but the sequel was a boxing office flop that left Bruin’s Awestruck.

Despite the same glitz and glamor as the original, the last scene was anything but a happy ending for No. 2 UCLA, which fell 80-67 to No. 4 USC Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion, cementing a Trojan sweeping the season series.

Lindsay Gottlieb had warned about this particular opportunity that her teams open in the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament may have the feeling of a NCAA tournament game considering the conference’s driving force of quality teams.

Don’t remember that the USC was top-seeded, second ranked nationally and ran on a seven-match winning row.

Four days after revealing to each other what they could do better during a movie that was only a player, Ucla Bruins found a few more voice points.

Their bad violation of bad shots was incoherent. Their defense was vulnerable. Their lead over what was supposed to be a strongly overwhelmed opponent was appalling.

It had been a forgetful afternoon for Juju Watkins when she was confronted with a double team on the low block early in the fourth quarter.

At that time, the USC Super Star had missed more shots than she had done. Her most memorable moment could have been when she threw the ball off the field in frustration after being called to charge in the first half.

One that says it is repeated this time of year in college basketball is that it’s hard to beat the same team three times in one season.

UCLA can show the proverb’s profit.
