Canada’s Liberal Party chooses Mark Carney to succeed Justin Trudeau

Cnn

Mark Carney has been elected leader of Canada’s Liberal Party for a month long run to replace Justin Trudeau.

He is now expected to lead the party into the next federal election – which will be held by October, but can be called much earlier – where he is likely to face fierce competition from the Conservative Party, which is currently leading in the polls.

While Carney will immediately take over as a Liberal Party Leader, Trudeau will remain as Canada’s prime minister for a not yet revealed transitional period while his successor is settling.

One of the biggest problems in Carney’s immediate inbox will be the country’s souring conditions with the United States.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly blamed Canada for illegal immigration to the United States, threatened to transform Canada into a 51. State and impose steep tariffs on Canadian imports, which the White House says is necessary to dampen the flow of fentanyl over its borders.

In his first comments following the outcome of the vote, Carney referred tensions with the United States and said his government would “create new trade conditions with reliable trading partners.” He also promised to keep retaliation on the United States “until Americans show us respect.”

“New threats require new ideas and a new plan,” he told the Liberal Party Convention on Sunday.

Carney, who slammed the Trump administration customs plans, said of the US president, “he attacks Canadian families, workers and businesses, and we can’t let him succeed and we won’t.”

“In trade as in hockey wins Canada,” he added.

The Rippele effects of the excited relations with the United States have spread through the Canadian community, with fans at the NHL and NBA game in Canada, who even lived the US national anthem.

Carney will now face Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who has previously been compared to Trump, but is now seeking to distance himself from the American leader and repeats at a press conference earlier this week that he is “not maga.”

At a demonstration on Sunday prior to the liberal vote, Poilievre delivered scared comments about Carney, a former governor of both the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, and portrayed him as a leader who is poorly equipped to deal with Trump.

“Work for Trudeau, Carney made Canada weaker and poorer; Working for himself Carney made the United States richer and stronger, ”said Poilievre.

In his comments after the results of the vote, Carney shot back at his conservative opponent.

“Donald Trump believes he can weaken us with his plan to divide and conquer. Pierre Poilievre’s plan will leave us divided and ready to be conquered, ”said Carney.

In recent weeks, the leader that the Conservatives enjoy has narrowed when Trudeau, Carney and other Liberal Party have taken strong positions in trade with the United States.

Trudeau has led the party for over a decade. He took the liberals to power in 2015 and promised “sunny ways” for Canada and was chosen twice more, most recently in 2021, when he remained in power, but lost his controlling majority.

Trudeau’s imminent departure follows a number of political crises, increasing financial dissatisfaction and surprise exempt from his Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland – who were also in the race to succeed him.

In some of his last remarks as a liberal party leader, Trudeau warned on Sunday that Canadians are facing an “existential challenge” from the United States.

“This is a national -defining moment,” he told the liberal leadership convention in Ottawa before Carney was announced as his successor.

“And now that Canadians face from our neighbor an existential challenge, an economic crisis, Canadians show exactly what we are made of,” Trudeau said.

Carney started his career in funding, and in 2019 he was named UN’s special envoy for climate action and finance. Based on his background, Carney has made pure energy, climate policies and financial prosperity for Canada some of the central facets of his campaign

Raised in Edmonton, Alberta, as he launched his campaign, Carney highlighted his role in helping the government tackle his debt during the 2008 financial crisis – and his role in navigating Britain’s economy through Brexit.

Carney has reset to bring economic prosperity to Canada using his natural resources as critical minerals and make Canada a leader in pure energy, emphasizing that being a low carbon content will help Canada be more competitive. He has proposed to change the financial burden of carbon tax from consumers to large companies and has said that the tax -leading Canadian consumers and small businesses under his management have said that the taxable Canadian consumers and small businesses pay on fuel would be replaced with incentives to reduce carbon emissions.

Carney has not thrown himself away from questions about how to tackle the Trump administration.

Since the US tariffs were announced last month, Carney has been a free-speaking spokesman for dollar-for-dollar benefits that would hit the United States hard but has a minimal impact on Canada.

Following Trump’s Customs Message and accusations of Fentanyl Trade from Canada to the United States, Carney told CNN last month he was “offended” considering Canada’s long friendship with the United States.

“We are a proud, independent nation. We consider ourselves the largest country on earth. We have been offended on several occasions by senior members in the administration. We will not retaliate in these insults. ”

This is an evolving story and will be updated.
