Warm this weekend but colder weather is on the way

Many places will enjoy a dry and very mild weekend, but a significant change in the weather is on the way with much colder conditions from the beginning of next week.

Yesterday, Santon Downham reached 19 ° C, and similar high temperatures are expected again this afternoon as Britain is dominated by high pressure.

Saturday will be another fine and dry day for most, with rain and wind in the north and slightly bumpy rain in the southwest. Temperatures are still expected to be well above average, with 17-19 ° C possible quite far.

It’s another hot day on Sunday with sunshine for many, although a contrast in the northern part of Scotland with sustained rain.

A change from Monday

As we welcome the new week, we begin to see a change in the very hot and dry conditions too late. A spell of rain will move south across the country on Monday, bringing a few winter showers to the north/northeast. Last Tuesday we start to see temperatures fall below average throughout the UK. Rural areas in Scotland could see -4 ° C Tuesday night with a maximum temperature of the day, typically between 5-8 ° C.

Deputy Chief Meteorologologist at MET Office, explains Chris Bulmer: “A frontal zone will move south across the UK during Sunday night and Monday with much colder air that follows from the north. With these cold northeast winds, we are likely to see some winter showers all over the north and east of the UK next week, but any accumulation of snow is probably largely limited to hills. We will also see a return to frost overnight in many areas.

“While there is uncertainty in the extent of rain and winter showers through the middle of next week, there is greater confidence that below average temperatures will continue throughout the week, bringing a very different feeling of the mild weather this weekend. “

How far ahead can you predict snow?

Prognosis snow in Britain is not like some other places along the UK’s latitude, where snow can be quite reliably expected days or weeks in advance. Find out more about How far ahead of snow can be expected in England.

Are we expecting a sudden stratospheric warning?

Over the past few days, forecasts have become more and more confident that we will see a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) in mid -March. This phenomenon is characterized by a reversal of wind, the polar vertebrae of the stratosphere, high up in the stratosphere. These winds are currently weakening rapidly.

Professor Adam Scaife, head of long -range forecasts at MET Office, said: “There is now over 80% chance that an SSW that occurs in the middle of the month can lead to some effects on the weather in the UK in late March. What these effects can be can be clearer closer to time. ”

An SSW can result in a large area of blocking high pressure over Northern Europe and the UK, which can lead to a period of cold, dry weather. However, this is not always the case and it is important to note that not all SSW events are followed by severe weather. More details of the intensity of surface weather effects from this event will be available in our weather forecasts.
