Brian Cashman ‘prepared for the worst’ with Gerrit Cole’s elbow injury

Jupiter, Fla. – Brian Cashman didn’t have an update – or very optimism – on Gerrit Cole’s condition one day after Yankee’s Ace said he was “worried” over his elbow.

“(I’m) prepared for the worst,” said Yankees GM before a 6-5 grapefruit league loss to the Cardinals. “We want to see how it plays out. I am always wired to think the worst and hope for the best. “

Cashman added: “That’s clearly not what you want, but it’s ultimately part of our journey here in 2025.”

In the second consecutive spring, Yankees finds himself holding your breath around the 2023 Cy Young winner diagnosed with elbow nerwine flammation and edema after only a spring start a year ago.

Cole, who experienced discomfort after his second spring start on Thursday against the twins, underwent testing and imaging on his right elbow Friday to get an “initial idea” about the injury.

He seeks further opinions.

The 34-year-old abandoned six races in 2 ²/₃ laps while building his pitch for 54, and manager Aaron Boone said he hopes to get an update on Monday.

On Saturday, Cole said he was “worried” about having to undergo an operation on the same elbow that closed him last season.

Cashman agreed with the six-time all-star and said “he should be worried,” but opposed the Yankees and Cole are more prepared to deal with this situation after reviewing it just a year ago.

“I was with him in Tampa. I think last year (it was) very emotional (for Cole) because it was a whole new experience, ”Cashman said. “This year now, not so emotional because he has already gone this line. And then I think he is mentally more prepared to tackle it because he has already treated this once before. So, and that’s even the worst case. Just in general, we are all in a better position to deal with something if we have had some experience in dealing with it in the past.

“So he has already had a lot of conversations. Much commitment with the doctors and lived through this last year. So less of an emotional shock this year, and now more about okay, what to do here, what is the best route to he and we. “

Still looking for possible watch list to overcome another damage -mare, if needed, at this time in March is “difficult,” Cashman said.

It is a hard pill to swallow for Yankees, especially after they have already taken a big blow to the rotation as it ruled Al Rookie of the Year Luis Gil was diagnosed with a high quality lat tribe that will sideline him at least until June.

Marcus Stroman is expected to fill to Gil.

If Cole wants to miss the time from Haugen, the door opens for right -wing handers Warren and Carlos Carrasco along with another depth of Allan Winans.

Yankees tried to avoid this particular position and change the coles offseason -kaste -regime.

He followed the program and Cashman said it looked like “smooth sailing.”

“Last year we had a successful rehabilitation with him,” Cashman said. “You know he came back and threw himself well for us in the second half and obviously dominant in the postal season. So it definitely felt like smooth sailing was ahead, but again pitching is very crisp. It’s just general, and in his specific cases obviously had a breakdown last spring somewhere around this time, and now we’re dealing with another situation, which is obviously more about because it’s not like the first episode now is the second episode. So we do what we need to do. “

When he debuted on June 19 last season, Cole threw himself into a 3.41 era across 17 starts in the regular season.

In another five starts in the post -season he threw himself to a 2.17 era, but was on the haug when Yankee’s imploded in Game 5 of the World Series.
