Gerrit Cole recommended for Tommy John Surgery, Yankees Awaiting Other Opinion

Yankee’s fans have waited nervously for news about ACE Gerrit Cole Ever since he was sent to “Diagnostic Tests” on the elbow on Friday. Today, Jim Bowden from Athletic Reports that Cole has been recommended for Tommy John surgery, though Yankees is currently waiting to receive another statement to confirm this diagnosis. The news is in line with reporting yesterday that Cole was “concerned” about his elbow and that the right one sought another statement on the question.

If the diagnosis is confirmed, Yankees would lose Cole for not only the 2025 season, but probably at least some of the 2026 campaign. Even if another statement suggests that Cole could rehabilitate the problem instead of going under the knife, even a relatively smaller elbow question could wipe out much of Cole’s 2025 campaign. It was just last year that the veteran right-hander was sidelined by elbow inflammation for almost three months at the start of the season and ultimately not debuting in the season before June 19. While it is impossible to establish a schedule for Cole’s return until the second opinion comes in, and Yankees announced more information about their veteran status, even the most optimistic estimates would probably leave Cole out of the commission for about Long.

Last season, Yankees was able to lean on the surprise contributions from any all rookie of the year Luis Gil To finish their rotation while the Cole was absent. They will not enjoy any such luxury this time as Gil is a ticket to miss several months even because of a lat strain. With Cole and Gil both apparently ticket to significant absence to open the 2025 campaign, a starting personnel so crowded by talent that Yankees chose to act Nestor Cortes to the breweries and acted aggressively Marcus Stroman During the winter will now search for answers as they try to patch the back of their rotation.

The good news for Yankees is that their rotation is still reasonably well -stocked. Max Fried is a viable ess-in-events on picking up the slack from the loss of Cole while Clarke Schmidt and Carlos Rodon Maintain their spots in the middle of the club’s projected rotation. With stroman sliding into the back of the rotation after entering the camp, which projected for a possible long relief role, it only leaves one place in the club’s start five to be filled in the first few months of the season.

The club has a handful of internal options available even with well -considered views Chase Hampton After reviewing Tommy John Surgery even last month. The top option on the club’s 40-man list as things are right-handed Will warrenthat debuted in the Big League last year. This cup of coffee at the big league level did not go very well when Warren was written off to the tune of a 10.32 era in 22 2/3 laps of the work. It was just a glimpse of Warren’s matches last year when he also flounders at the Triple-A level with a 5.91 era across 23 starts at the highest level of minors. With that said, the 25-year-old has impressed so far in the spring with a 1.13 era in three appearances. If Yankees thinks that the problems plagued Warren in 2024 are behind him, it’s easy to imagine that he’s being chosen as the fifth starts despite the question similar to Gil last year.

Warren is not the only option that Yankees has at their disposal, but which a handful of non-Roster-Invited is in the camp with the club at this time. Veteran right handles Carlos Carrasco is just days away from his 38 -year birthday and has fought poorly for the past two years with a 6.18 era in 193 2/3 laps of work for Mets and Guardians, but his 15 -year MLB experience could offer the club some veteran stability at the back of the rotation, although Carrasco’s overall results are very likely to be well below the average. Right Handler Allan Winans and Southpaw Brandon Leibrandt is among the club’s other non-loster-invited ones that could be theoretically called.

Another option would of course be to look outside the organization for rotational aid. It is certainly not Yankees’ favorite course of action; After all, the budget problems prevented them from adding a Surefire -Infielder on the second or third base to pair with Jazz Chisholm Jr. This winter leaves the club to sort through smooth options as Oswaldo CabreraAt Oswald PerazaAnd the novel DJ Lemahieu In the hot corner. With that said, former Yankee Jordan Montgomery Could certainly be acquired from diamondbacks for almost no cost than eating part of Lefty’s salary after his difficult 2024 campaign, while interesting options like Kyle Gibson and Spencer Turnbull Stay available in free agency. It is hardly an exhaustive list of potential external candidates, although many clubs may prefer to keep their potential trade chips until the trade deadline at this point in the calendar, unless overwhelmed by an offer.
