No. 4 USC women’s soccer teams fall in PK’s to Rutgers at Big Ten Tournament

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Despite dominating possession and outscoring Rutgers 26-11, the No. 4 USC women’s soccer team was kicked out of the Big Ten Tournament on penalty kicks Thursday afternoon in St. Louis.

The semifinal game ended in a 1-1 draw, but the Scarlett Knights advanced thanks to a 3-0 PK shootout. USC moves to 15-1-3 with the tie, while Rutgers moves to 11-3-5. The Trojans are still unbeaten in their last 13 games.

USC broke a scoreless tie early in the second half, then Simon Jackson grabbed a rebound deep in the area and fired a shot home to make it 1-0 in the 47th.th minute. The advantage lasted until the 52ndn.d minute as Rutgers found an equalizer despite being a player down due to a red card.

USC outscored Rutgers 13-5 in the second half and 8-0 in overtime as the Trojans had several near misses saved by Scarlett Knight keeper Olivia Bodmer.

Bodmer was credited with eight saves in the game and then went on to save all three penalty kicks she faced. USCs Laurence Gladu got a hand on two of the three shots she faced in the shootout, but both deflected into the net.

SCORING

47′ – USC: Simon Jackson (assisted by Hannah Griffin) – Griffin had a shot blocked, but the bouncing ball fell to Jackson just outside the six-yard box, and Jackson fired a shot inside the right post.

52′ – ROUT: Ashley Baran (assisted by Sydney Urban, Emily Mason) – Mason sent a long ball into the area and Urban sent a header to Baran who ran it down and fired a shot across goal and into the far post right post from deep near the end line.
